How much CO2do I generate by using the internet?
Did you know that…
Now, we cannot track the individual internet usage of every person. Calculating data energy pollution depends on many factors and scientists need various data sources in order to come up with an accurate estimate. And let’s not forget the increase of post-Covid internet usage in the last couple of years.
That’s one of the reasons we assign a relatively high level of usage because let’s face it – humanity is using the internet more and more each year thanks to the technological innovations we’re witnessing and the Covid lockdown.
So, we assume that each of our users streams around three hours of HD videos every day (that’s relatively 630GB per month) on different platforms.
And according to the latest global internet usage statistics 2022, the average internet user spends around seven hours online each day on various devices. That’s basically half the time we spend awake each day!
Our digital presence is getting more and more harmful to the environment every year. How much time does humanity spend online? Scientists have estimated that in 2022, people will spend the astonishing 1.4 billion years of combined human existence on the internet. Think about the carbon footprint of that internet usage now!
So, we added that daily browsing time to our research. With a 4.2gr (0.0042kg) of carbon dioxide per GB, this amounts to between 20 and 50 kg of CO2 generated per user per year.
Our mission
By offsetting the carbon emissions for all users of our Chrome extension we strive to make the biggest impact possible in 2022. Our users can partake in the efforts of millions of people all over the world to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by simply installing our product.
Our inspiration and motivation
Millions of people around the world are taking action in 2022. Some are joining international organizations and communities like #teamtrees – donating money for planting trees across the globe helps fight deforestation.
Fixing climate change needs to happen gradually and with the joint efforts of millions of people in order to produce a positive and long-lasting change.
Another way to contribute to the cause is to go green! Many of us are making an effort to reduce our carbon footprint by carpooling and using a bicycle more often, going vegan and/or consuming only local and seasonal produce, shopping with reusable shopping bags, recycling, or going the whole nine yards towards a zero-waste lifestyle. The list goes on of course and it’s up to each and every individual to decide how they’re going to contribute to the health of our planet.
How about plastic? The impact of plastic production is toxic and hazardous in many different ways. Discarding plastic solid waste in the form of packaging materials is one of the global environmental issues we’re facing in our time.
Organizations are already working hard towards reducing marine litter – the time for change is now!
How to restore the balance which has been so violently disrupted and become better at preserving what we have left? Achieving a sustainable existence on the planet is going to be the top priority of humanity for the decades to come.
